How Cyanoacrylate Adhesives Have Improved

There are various reasons why cyanoacrylate adhesives have grown in popularity despite their relatively higher cost per unit.

First, cyanoacrylate adhesives are one-compound adhesives, so they are ready to use. They cure and bond very quickly when applied or pressed into a thin layer between two substrates. And they create a strong bond between different surfaces. Additionally, they can be applied easily with manual or automatic equipment.

While early generations of cyanoacrylate adhesives had limitations, improvement has been dramatic and building steam, partly via the development of new monomers. Light-curing cyanoacrylate adhesives have been developed in recent times, which can cure within three seconds.

Similarly, while earlier cyanoacrylate adhesives tended to have poor heat and moisture resistance, newer cyanoacrylate adhesives have better toughness and shear strength. They also have faster cures, and improved thermal and impact resistance.

With the addition of plasticizers such as phthalates, aliphatic esters, and aromatic phosphates, peel strength and shock resistance have also been improved. Elastomeric tougheners such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, ethylene-methyl acrylate and other copolymers have also been used to boost the strength of new cyanoacrylate adhesives.
