Rubber Bonding: How to Bond Natural Rubber

Rubber Bonding: How to Bond Natural Rubber

Permabond 105 is the first choice for natural rubber bonding. PERMABOND® 105 is a low viscosity, high purity cyanoacrylate rubber bonding adhesive. It is ideal for use on plastics and rubbers such as natural rubber, EPDM, and butyl rubber. Natural Rubber is a challenging material for most adhesives, but with Permabond 105, you don’t even need to use a primer (such as POP) before bonding, such is the strength it provides on this substrate.

Natural rubber exhibits high tensile strength and elongation, making it durable and suitable for use in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and other transportation applications. Other applications include engineering applications, anti-vibration mounts, and drive couplings. Permabond 105 is MIL-A-46050C Type II Class 1 for existing designs, meaning it meets the U.S. military specification for cyanoacrylate adhesives that are medium-viscosity, general-purpose, and qualified for use in legacy or previously approved defense/aerospace designs..

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are single component adhesives that polymerize (set into a hard plastic) rapidly when pressed into a thin film between parts. The moisture absorbed on the surface initiates the curing of the adhesive. Strong bonds are developed extremely fast and on a great variety of materials. These properties make PERMABOND cyanoacrylates ideal rubber bonding adhesives for high speed production lines.

Directions for rubber bonding

1) First, apply the adhesive sparingly to one surface.
2) Then, bring the components together quickly, making sure they are  correctly aligned.
3) Apply sufficient pressure to ensure the adhesive spreads into a thin film.
4) Do not disturb or re–align until sufficient strength develops, generally in a few seconds.
5) Any surplus adhesive can be removed with Permabond CA solvent, nitromethane, or acetone.

FAQs on Rubber Bonding & Rubber Bonding Adhesives

What is the best adhesive for rubber bonding?

Cyanoacrylate adhesives, such as Permabond 105, are widely considered the best rubber bonding adhesives because they create strong, fast-setting bonds on natural rubber, EPDM, and other elastomers.

Can I bond rubber without a primer?

Yes, with the right rubber bonding adhesive like Permabond 105, there is no need for a primer to achieve high bond strength.

Is rubber bonding suitable for automotive applications?

Absolutely. Rubber bonding adhesives are commonly used in automotive parts such as anti-vibration mounts, hoses, and seals where durability and flexibility are critical.

How long does rubber bonding adhesive take to set?

Most cyanoacrylate rubber bonding adhesives cure within seconds when the surfaces are pressed together, making them ideal for high-speed production.
