Last year, a customer who was struggling to bond metal emblems to tinted glass bottles reached out to us for guidance. Gluing metal to glass would normally be an easy job for a UV-curing adhesive. These achieve a very high bond strength on glass and are great for use on high-speed production lines given their exceptionally fast cure.
In this instance, however, the customer was struggling to get a strong bond using a traditional UV adhesive. This was due to the poor transmittance of UV light through the coloured glass. Some light was getting through, but not enough to form a solid bond. This was resulting in an insufficient cure that resulted in the bond coming apart very easily.
Other than bonding said glass to metal, the other thing that the customer wanted was good environmental durability. They needed an adhesive that could withstand high heat and humidity, as well as offer good chemical resistance. They wanted to perform accelerated aging tests that involved heat, humidity, temperature cycling and thermal shock, all of which the adhesive would need to withstand in order to pass. Despite these unfavourable conditions not expected to be present in the end product’s everyday life, the customer wanted to make sure that the adhesive was resilient and had good longevity.
A breakthrough in coloured glass bonding
With these requirements laid out, Permabond got to work on developing what is sure to be a pioneering adhesive in the UV market. Introducing Permabond UV6260 – a highly reactive adhesive that cures at low UV light intensity. This product is great for bonding tinted or light-blocking glass and/or where UV light is being ‘filtered’ by another substrate. This makes it ideal for gluing metal, or other substrates such as plastics, to glass.
Bearing the customer’s demands for environmental durability in mind, Permabond UV6260 passes 85/85 accelerated aging tests. This test involves a product being subjected to 85°C at 85% relative humidity for an extended period. It is commonly used and highly sought after in the automotive industry, among others.
It’s not only glass that UV6260 is able to bond – it also works very well on metals such as stainless steel and UV-stabilised plastics like polycarbonate, PMMA and ABS. Unlike some other UV adhesive it has a very low shrinkage, cures to a tack-free finish, and is also RoHS compliant, making it well suited for use in electronics applications such as encapsulation, glob topping and wire tacking.
With its excellent environmental durability, the adhesive is well suited to both indoor and outdoor applications. Its high elongation at break means it’s able to handle differential thermal expansion and contraction well, an issue commonly experienced when bonding dissimilar substrates. It works well on high-speed production lines, as the dispensation of the adhesive can easily be automated.
