Clean drinking water is vital to everyone. Various approval agencies ensure adhesives that come in contact with potable water meet strict criteria. In North America, manufacturers are concerned that the product or equipment they manufacture for potable water have NSF /ANSI Standard 61 Drinking Water System Components Approval. KIWA is the Dutch Water Approval, and WRAS is the United Kingdoms whereas KTW / TZW Approval and DVGW are German. Although there are differences in how each handles approvals, they are all dedicated to safe water.
Various products are approved for each of the above. Some of the products are for bonding and include cyanoacrylates and epoxies. Most of the applications related to potable water applications are sealing applications for metal threads on fasteners and pipe.
Anaerobic adhesives and sealants are ideal for sealing metal fasteners and metal threaded pipe connections.
Threadlockers, such as Permabond MM115 PURE is NSF/ANSI 61 Certified and is a medium viscosity removable threadlocker that seals and locks the fasteners to prevent vibration loosening.
Thread sealants such as Permabond LH050 PURE (NSF/ANSI 61 certified) and A131 (KIWA and WRAS approved), and HM146 (KTW / TZW approved) seal threaded pipe work against various gases and liquids, including potable water.
Anaerobic adhesives are single component liquids or pastes that cure when oxygen is excluded in the joint, and metal is present. The sealant fills the space between the connecting parts and instantly seals the connection. Once fully cured, the sealant typically exceeds the burst rating of the pipe.
