Many of the adhesive features battery manufacturers require play off each other.<\/p>\n<p>Following is a partial list of commonly requested features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low Weight \u2013 Expandable adhesive products<\/li>\n<li>Good Heat Dissipation &#8211; Thermal Conductivity<\/li>\n<li>Low Cost \u2013 Efficient process and<\/li>\n<li>Electrical Resistance \u2013 High Dielectric Strength<\/li>\n<li>Safety &#8211; Fire Retardant Products<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Resistance &#8211; Encapsulants<\/li>\n<li>Adhesion \u2013 Durable or controlled<\/li>\n<li>Temperature swings &#8211; Thermal Expansion and Contraction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As battery manufacturers work to improve safety, reduce weight, increase performance <em>and<\/em> lower costs of battery-powered vehicles and machines, adhesive chemists are rapidly developing new products with unique features to allow the advancement of e-mobility.<\/p>\n<p>The features of these adhesives for electric vehicle batteries are dialed in to meet unique specifications. The challenge comes in balancing one or more characteristics against the others.<\/p>\n<p>For example, high thermal conductivity is a common requirement. Batteries can get extremely hot while charging, and the faster the charge \u2013 the higher the heat. Of course, dissipating the heat between the battery cells and bonding the modules to the heat sink are goals of the adhesive.\u00a0 In addition, the adhesive ensures no water ingress, which could cause short circuits or damage to components. Another key feature the adhesive must have is high dielectric strength to provide good electrical resistance and prevent arcing.<\/p>\n<p>High thermal conductivity is easy to achieve in adhesives. However, engineers must balance thermal conductivity against increased cost, viscosity, weight, and potential reduction in electrical resistance.
