{"id":2934,"date":"2019-01-21T16:40:23","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T16:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/metal-bonding-acrylic-adhesives\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T18:34:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T18:34:04","slug":"metal-bonding-acrylic-adhesives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/fr\/metal-bonding-acrylic-adhesives\/","title":{"rendered":"Metal Bonding Acrylic Adhesives"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Metal Bonding Acrylic Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p>Epoxies, Cyanoacrylates, and several other technologies provide excellent adhesion to metals.\u00a0 But, acrylic metal bonding adhesives are often a good choice not only for the strong bonds to metals but also for the variety of curing options available, which can optimize production processes.<\/p>\n<p>Many acrylic adhesives form strong bonds to a variety of metals &#8211; often &#8211; choosing the best metal bonding acrylic adhesive, is based on the best way to apply and cure the adhesive.<\/p>\n<h2>Two Component Acrylic Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p>Many 2 part acrylic adhesives have a short pot life, said differently they begin to cure very quickly.\u00a0 In this case, it is best to dispense these adhesives via static mix nozzles onto one component then assemble the components quickly.\u00a0 This is ideal for many high speed processes.<\/p>\n<p>Some 2 part acrylic adhesives are MMA based.\u00a0 Although this type can provide high bond strength to plastics, they are flammable and have a distinctive strong odor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/ta452_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">Permabond TA452<\/a> is a non-flammable low odor adhesive which provides up to 3,500 psi (24 N\/mm2) shear strength on steel.\u00a0 It has a nozzle life of 2-3 minutes and develops strength very rapidly, achieving 80% of full bond strength in 75 minutes.<\/p>\n<h2>Two-Part &#8211; No Mix Metal Bonding Acrylic Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/ta4246_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">Permabond TA4246<\/a>\u00a0 is a No-Mix adhesive which is used in conjunction with Initiator 46 to form strong bonds to metal, glass, magnets, and composites.\u00a0\u00a0 With no gap, TA4246 develops 80% of its strength in an hour.\u00a0 Full strength on steel is over 5000 psi (35 N\/mm2) TA4246 is an MMA based adhesive, so there is a distinctive odor.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t bonding plastic, consider non-flammable <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/ta4590_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">TA4590<\/a> along with Initiator 44. Full strength on steel is 3600 psi (25 N\/mm2).\u00a0 Achieve 80% of the strength in under an hour and handling time (0.3 N\/mm2) in under a minute.<\/p>\n<p>The ability to remove parts from fixtures\/jigs in under a minute can greatly improve production efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Never mix the initiator with the adhesive.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply Initiator to one surface.<\/li>\n<li>Apply adhesive to the other surface.<\/li>\n<li>Assemble the components using sufficient force to spread the adhesive thinly. Bond part immediately or within a maximum of two hours after applying the Initiator.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain pressure until handling strength is achieved. The time required will vary according to the joint design, gap, and surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Allow 24 hours for adhesive to fully cure. Or, accelerate the cure times with heat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Two-Part- Bead on Bead\u00a0 Metal Bonding Acrylic Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/ta440_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">Permabond TA440<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply TA440A to one surface and TA440B to the other.<\/li>\n<li>Alternatively, dispense \u2018bead-on-bead\u2019 (one bead on top of the other) and then assemble parts. NOTE: Applying adhesive side by side is not advisable as this may not achieve adequate mixing.<\/li>\n<li>Then, maintain pressure until handling strength is achieved. The time required will vary according to the joint design and the surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, allow 24 hours for adhesive to fully cure. Or, accelerate the cure times with heat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the above instructions aren&#8217;t clear, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_sjy33swmBg&amp;feature=youtu.be\">curing instruction video.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a controlled process that provides adequate mixing of the adhesive, shear strength values on steel of 3600 psi (25 N\/mm2) can be achieved.\u00a0 With no gap, handling time of 90 seconds or less is possible.<\/p>\n<h2>One-Part -Metal Bonding Acrylic Adhesive<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/ta437_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">Permabond TA437<\/a> can be used without initiator when bonding metals.\u00a0 It is a single component structural acrylic adhesive, primarily for bonding metals, ferrites, and ceramics. When the use of the activator is not desirable, the material will cure anaerobically in a close-fitting joint \/in the presence of metal; the fixture time will be 5-10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The typical fixture time of TA437 when used with Initiator 41 is 20-30 seconds.
