{"id":1897,"date":"2014-06-12T00:51:12","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T00:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/protective-decorative-dome-coating\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T12:02:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T12:02:52","slug":"protective-decorative-dome-coating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/fr\/protective-decorative-dome-coating\/","title":{"rendered":"Protective and Decorative Dome Coating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dome coating of decorative, novelty items such as pens, lapel pins, name plates, and logo stickers is common.\u00a0 The coating forms a protective layer over the items, but generally, the main purpose is the glossy, raised appearance which can magnify the image below it.\u00a0 In other applications, the coating is primarily protective, and the appearance is of less concern.<\/p>\n<p>The coating selection process is similar for both protective and decorative coatings.\u00a0 The main points to consider in selecting a dome coating are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Processing<\/li>\n<li>Parts<\/li>\n<li>Purpose<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Processing choices \u2013 Today, there are a variety of processing choices available including: a) two component reactive systems, b) solvent based systems, and c) UV Curable systems.\u00a0 Two component reactive systems require mixing, followed by de-airing.\u00a0 Solvent based systems can create difficulties with health and safety and workplace handling.<\/p>\n<h3>UV Curable Done Coating<\/h3>\n<h6>Processing<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/products\/structural-acrylic-adhesives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UV Curable<\/a> dome coating requires UV cure equipment which can be costly.\u00a0 However, equipment choices have expanded and become less costly due to developments in dome coating chemistry.\u00a0 Historically, fairly high intensity UV light was required to cure the surface of the coating to a tack free dry surface.\u00a0 Recent advances in UV curable dome coating materials now offer a tack free finished appearance with low intensity UV light (which also helps minimize shrinkage and overheating during cure).<\/p>\n<p>These advances expand the selection of lamps that are appropriate for coating.\u00a0 Tailor the curing process by choosing a lamp that provides the optimal time vs. intensity cure model for the coating.<\/p>\n<h6>Parts<\/h6>\n<p>Parts \u2013What are the substrates?\u00a0 A common dome coating application is dome coating a logo.\u00a0 The logo may be a screen printed paint or a sticker\u2026 so consider what material does the coating need to bond to?\u00a0 This will help to determine a product with good adhesion to the substrate. Will the coating material in its liquid form attack the ink or artwork?<\/p>\n<p>Is the part flexible?\u00a0 If the end item requires flexing, the coating should be flexible to increase durability.\u00a0 If the end item is very thin or very flexible, consider the dome depth, shrinkage, and hardness of the coating. This is to ensure the part doesn\u2019t curl up on the edges.<\/p>\n<h6>Purpose<\/h6>\n<p>Purpose \u2013 Like all scientists, adhesive manufacturers like to hear the numbers.
