Cyanoacrylate adhesive<\/a> is an important tool in the fight against crime as it makes latent fingerprints visible for photographing and identification.\u00a0 There are three types of fingerprints: visible, impression, and latent. The first two are easily photographed under correct lighting conditions. But, latent prints are not visible.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Cyanoacrylate adhesives cure by reacting with microscopic moisture traces present on virtually all surfaces. Most industrial cyanoacrylate users do not like the white \u201cblooming\u201d effect often caused by cyanoacrylate adhesives. Residue can be particularly visible on dark-colored surfaces. This has prompted the development of alkoxy-ethyl based cyanoacrylates and specialist activators, which offer low odor and non-blooming properties.\u00a0 Conversely, forensic scientists consider the high-fuming\/low boiling point cyanoacrylates the most valuable in their investigative activities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How to make latent prints visible with Permabond cyanoacrylate:<\/h3>\r\n

    Construct a suitable gassing chamber \u2013 e.g. a basic wooden framework with clear PVC plastic sheeting taped round it. Alternatively, use a suitably sized glass jar.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  2. \r\n
    Place items inside the chamber.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  3. \r\n
    Introduce a bowl of hot water (this will increase the humidity in the chamber).<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  4. \r\n
    Add a separate dish containing a few drops of cyanoacrylate. Permabond CPP621<\/a>, high fume grade, offers high \u201cbloom\u201d and a speedy process time.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  5. \r\n
    Tape the chamber shut.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  6. \r\n
    Development time can take from 5 to 30 minutes.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  7. \r\n
    Remove the item. You should be able to see a small amount of white residue on the fingerprints.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n
  8. \r\n
    You can now dust with a colored fingerprinting powder ready for transfer onto fingerprinting tape (prints can normally be transferred several times) and then mounted it on record cards for photographing and archiving evidence.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
