{"id":1585,"date":"2015-07-02T05:36:10","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T05:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/cyanoacrylate-adhesive-environmental-resistance\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T17:35:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T17:35:07","slug":"cyanoacrylate-adhesive-environmental-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/fr\/cyanoacrylate-adhesive-environmental-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyanoacrylate Adhesive Environmental Resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div class=\"wrapped-image-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cyano-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-719\" src=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cyano-1-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"cyano\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a>\r\n<div class=\"wrapped-txt\">\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chemical-resistance\">Chemical Resistance of Cyanoacrylate Adhesive<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It doesn\u2019t seem logical, but <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/acrylic-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyanoacrylate adhesives<\/a> have more chemical resistance to gasoline than they do to water.\u00a0 One customer who used acetone to remove excess adhesive wanted to speed up the process.\u00a0 So he tried toluene which is normally thought of as a stronger solvent.\u00a0 The toluene didn\u2019t seem to have much effect at all. The bottom line is <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/acrylic-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyanoacrylates<\/a> have poor resistance to polar solvents and better resistance to non-polar solvents.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The dielectric constant of each solvent provides a general measure of a solvent&#8217;s polarity.\u00a0 Water is very polar and (at 70\u00b0F the dielectric constant is 80.\u00a0 Gasoline is non-polar at 70\u00b0F the dielectric constant is 2.\u00a0 Although water will remove it over time, manufacturers recommend removing <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/acrylic-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyanoacrylate<\/a> adhesive with acetone which has a dielectric constant of 21 and nitromethane which is 36.\u00a0 Both acetone and nitromethane are polar aprotic solvents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Other factors that affect the chemical resistance of the bond include temperature and bond design.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heat-resistance\">Heat resistance of Cyanoacrylate Adhesive<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The following chart shows the % strength retention of <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/acrylic-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyanoacrylates<\/a>.\u00a0 Standard <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/acrylic-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cyanoacrylates<\/a> retain about 50% of their original strength at 80\u00b0C.\u00a0 Enhanced grades retain 50% strength to 120\u00b0C.\u00a0 Special high temperature grades resist much higher temperatures.\u00a0 To activate the high temperature resistance, the following secondary curing mechanism enables additional cross linking of the polymer, allowing the cured adhesive to resist higher temperatures.\u00a0 Note: this procedure will only activate the high temperature resistance designed into specialty grades.\u00a0 It will not improve the temperature resistance of other grades.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>1) Parts are bonded and clamped at room temperature for four hours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>2) The clamped parts are then heated at 150\u00b0C (302\u00b0F) for two hours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>3) Then, after the two hours, the bond will be thermally resistant up to 250\u00b0C (482\u00b0).<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>For resistance to 200\u00b0C (392\u00b0F) with no need for a secondary heat cure choose <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/tds\/825_tds-en\/?pdf=1\">Permabond 825<\/a> (Patented Technology)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cyano-resistance-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-720\" src=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cyano-resistance-1.png\" alt=\"cyano resistance\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For further help and advice, please <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/contact-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact<\/a>\u00a0Permabond.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chemical Resistance of Cyanoacrylate Adhesive It doesn\u2019t seem logical, but cyanoacrylate adhesives have more chemical resistance to gasoline than they do to water.\u00a0 One customer who used acetone to remove excess adhesive wanted to speed up the process.\u00a0 So he tried toluene which is normally thought of as a stronger solvent.\u00a0 The toluene didn\u2019t seem [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":1586,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[794,603],"tags":[42,57],"class_list":["post-1585","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-adhesive-properties-de","category-environmental-resistance","tag-adhesives","tag-cyanoacrylates"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Cyanoacrylate Chemical Resistance &amp; Temperature.
