{"id":1563,"date":"2015-06-05T00:42:05","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T00:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/glass-bonding-troubleshooting\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T09:29:57","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T09:29:57","slug":"glass-bonding-troubleshooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/fr\/glass-bonding-troubleshooting\/","title":{"rendered":"Glass bonding &#8211; Troubleshooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>When Glass Bonding Goes Wrong\u2026<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>The adhesive won\u2019t stick; the glass bond is coming clean off the glass:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check surface preparation<\/li>\n<li>Joint design \u2013 If your glass bond is a butt joint, this can be problematic as this introduces peel or cleavage stress into the joint. Try to redesign the joint to minimize the peel stress.\u00a0 You can also build up a fillet or meniscus of adhesive around the joint which can reduce the peel stress.<\/li>\n<li>Check with the glass manufacturer if there is some layer of something on the glass, process additive, or \u201cself-cleaning\u201d property of the glass which may be affecting the adhesion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Bonded Joint has Crazy-Paving effect\u2026<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThis crazed effect is caused by air getting into the joint before the adhesive is cured. The solution is to take the joint apart, clean up and start again. Make sure when the joint is assembled, it is firmly clamped during cure and not disturbed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Glass Has Cracked\u2026<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThis may be due to temperature changes and differential thermal expansion and contraction between substrates. Switch to a softer, more flexible adhesive (something with a lower Shore D value or Shore A, which is softer).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>UV Adhesive isn\u2019t Curing\u2026<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nColored or UV-blocking glass can be a problem as not enough UV light of the correct wavelength is getting through the glass to cure the adhesive. To bond UV blocked glass, switch to a visible light cure <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/products\/uv-glue-uv-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UV adhesive<\/a> which will cure between 400 and 420nm wavelength instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Disassembling Joints and removing cured adhesive<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nObviously, you have to be extremely careful not to break the glass. Heating the joint up to above the service temperature of the adhesive will soften the adhesive and make it a lot easier to disassemble.
