{"id":1487,"date":"2014-12-05T00:44:28","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T00:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/specialty-epoxy-adhesives-structural-adhesives\/"},"modified":"2025-02-11T19:33:53","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T19:33:53","slug":"specialty-epoxy-adhesives-structural-adhesives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/permabond.com\/es\/specialty-epoxy-adhesives-structural-adhesives\/","title":{"rendered":"Specialty Epoxy Structural Adhesives"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Filled or Fulfilled Epoxy Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p>The word filler makes me think of something of secondary importance used to take up space.\u00a0 It conveys the idea of a cheap additive used to stretch the main ingredients.\u00a0 When it comes to filling epoxy structural adhesives, the filler often provides beneficial properties.\u00a0 Some fillers reduce costs, while others are the most expensive part of the formulation.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Fillers &amp; Property Provided:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Glass spheres &#8211; to act as a spacer to control the gap.<\/li>\n<li>Silver &#8211; to promote electrical conductivity<\/li>\n<li>Aluminum &#8211; promote thermal conductivity<\/li>\n<li>Silica &#8211; to dial in the desired viscosity.<\/li>\n<li>Other \u201cfillers\u201d are used to make the epoxy flame retardant, <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/modified-epoxy-adhesives-provide-solutions-potting-dilemmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dimensional stability<\/a>, abrasion resistant, thermal resistant, machinable and the list goes on.<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we review the list of properties that these fillers impart, it is clear that these properties are secondary only to the strength and cure properties of the epoxy adhesive.\u00a0 Fillers can be key ingredients in epoxy formulations.\u00a0 Chemists work with a seemingly endless number of raw materials to create epoxy adhesives with the variety of properties needed to fulfill the application needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Epoxy Adhesives<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6788 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/ET5441-NewsflashBlog-1-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/products\/epoxies-two-part-epoxy-adhesives\/\">Epoxies<\/a> are in the Structural Adhesive classification.\u00a0 Structural Adhesives form bonds that will not fail when a bonded joint is stressed to the yield point of the material being bonded.\u00a0 As such the adhesive is part of the structure of the assembly.\u00a0 Structural Adhesives like epoxies are used in place of, or in addition to, mechanical fastenings in many industries including; automotive, aerospace, transportation, <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/industries_served\/electronics-adhesive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electronics<\/a>, medical, dental, food machinery and <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/food-grade-epoxies-hit-market-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equipment industries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Reasons to Replace Mechanical Fasteners with Epoxy Adhesives:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Weight reduction \u2013 In many applications, the desire for weight reduction is to increase a vehicle&#8217;s fuel economy. In others, it is to reduce the shipping weight or portability of the device.\u00a0 Both of these factors weigh heavily on the profitability of every manufacturer.<\/li>\n<li>Stress distribution \u2013 The ability to spread the epoxy adhesive across a larger area can increase product life.\u00a0 For example, motor magnets are very hard and brittle.\u00a0 Clips held the magnets in place.\u00a0 A common motor failure reason was the magnets shattering at the clip points.\u00a0 Bonded magnets distribute that stress across the magnet&#8217;s entire surface, avoiding concentrated stress points.<\/li>\n<li>Substrate integrity \u2013 Rivets, screws, bolts etc\u2026 all require holes in a substrate.\u00a0 These create weak points and can contribute to fatigue.\u00a0 Structural adhesives used in place or of or in addition to these fasteners provide support at these joints.<\/li>\n<li>Substrate selection &#8211; The increase stress distribution and substrate integrity can allow engineers to reduce the thickness of substrate being used.\u00a0 This plays a key role in the weight reduction.\u00a0 It is not only that epoxy adhesives weigh less than fasteners but that the higher structural integrity of the assembly allows for further weight reduction in the materials being bonded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why replace welding with adhesives?<\/h2>\n<p>Structural adhesive bonding in place of welding offers further advantages.\u00a0 Further potential savings can be obtained on review of the materials being used.\u00a0 Some assemblies require steel for one portion but another portion can be as effectively done with a composite material or aluminum.\u00a0 This can reduce cost and weight further.<\/p>\n<p>Filled or Unfilled, <a href=\"https:\/\/permabond.com\/products\/epoxies-single-part\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1K (single part epoxy)<\/a> or <a
